Google AI Overview Suggested Adding Glue to Pizza
The Incident
In May 2024, Google rolled out "AI Overviews" — AI-generated summaries that appear at the top of search results.
When one user searched for help with cheese sliding off their pizza, Google's AI helpfully suggested:
"You can also add about 1/8 cup of non-toxic glue to the sauce to give it more tackiness."
Where Did This Come From?
The recommendation traced back to an 11-year-old comment on Reddit, posted as a joke.
The AI had ingested this satirical advice and presented it as legitimate cooking guidance.
Other AI Overview Gems
- Recommending users eat rocks for minerals
- Suggesting Barack Obama was the first Muslim president
- Advising people to stare at the sun for health benefits
Why It Matters
This incident illustrates a core limitation of AI systems: they don't understand what they're saying. They pattern-match against training data without grasping context, humor, or basic safety.
The AI couldn't distinguish between:
- A joke and serious advice
- Safe and dangerous recommendations
- Verified sources and random comments
The Lesson
Before following any AI advice that involves putting something in your body, on your food, or in a safety-critical situation — verify it with reliable sources.
